I'd say it depends on what your intended use is.
I have a 110v 5hp campbell hausfield 26 gallon compressor that I've never run out of air with.. the closest I've come is with the air gun, which even then seems to put out a good psi with the tank empty and only the pump supplying.
recently though I was given a 60 gallon tank, which I put the pump from my 26gallon on, and it runs almost exactly the same. (just takes longer to fill)
every job I've done it's supplied perfectly.. using the angle grinder though, i can run it pretty slow. but even then, while using the angle grinder it gives me a forced "break" to prevent over-heating the sheet steel I use it on.
I do eventually plan on getting a two stage compressor. So that I can be saved a bit on the noise for "smaller" jobs... but I'm in no rush (at all) to get it.. considering I picked the one I have now for $80 (craigslist) I can't complain.
