Your temperature gauge is a hollow tube...a capillary tube full of ether. For all intensive purposes you cannot repair it. It has to be professionally repaired or replaced.
If you are asking if you can run a alternator and still use the ammeter, the answer is yes. The alternator BATT wire can connect to the BATT wire that was on the voltage regulator and this will run the alternator output through the ammeter and show charge. Hope I got this right.
