If the "universal" did not come with installation instructions and/or letter-labels near attachment screws, you might want to contact the seller to ask if they have information.

Here is a 1954 wiring diagram that should show you the wire colors for the different circuits that are wired through the light switch.

It looks like most of the circuits that go through the light switch are protected by a circuit breaker inside the light switch.
