The nose on some of the starters are different, some old ones bolt to the bellhousing and some bolt to the block.The later models usually had 2 bolts and bolted to the block, there were 2 different noses for the starters, one was for a larger flywheel. pull the starter and look at the nose on both of them and see what you have.Other than that you could take the soeniod off of the starter and look at the engagement between the starter and flywheel, if it's tight there are shims available to shim the starter down from the block.
