Thanks for your comprehensive answer. Sorry to put you to all that trouble when all I really needed was the part on the leaner mixture burning slower and so requiring more advance.
Like Stuart, I was pretty sure that my stovebolt sixes had the centrifugal advance weights and springs in the distributor. I haven't looked in there for quite a while though. Guess I need to take another look.
