The "box" should be the voltage regulator. Has the truck been converted to a modern type internally regulated alternator? The older alternator were externally regulated, just like the generators that preceded them. If it's been converted, that would explain the hot wore, as the horn relay usually got its heavy lead directly from the regulator, rather than the battery.
