Usually those were agricultural applications. My '51 was a farm truck where the owner fashioned a sheep pen as a bed for transporting a handful of ewes. Mine was 7 by 8 1/2 feet.
I have seen a few flatbeds from the factory, but most of those have fenders under a full width stake bed.
