The little oil hole on the side of the rod points toward the cam.And the notch on top of the piston should point to the front of the motor if everything is assembled correctly.
And, as mentioned above,ring end gap is measured at the bottom of the cylinder. The cylinders usually taper by abt. 4thousandths.
