I like to pull them separatly. If you are just going to change the flexplate & have acsess to a trans jack or equivilent just pull the trans.
Take off the lower cover & remove the 3 bolts holding the converter to the flexplate. Remove the drive shaft, The rear crossmember. Put a jack under the back part of the oil pan with a block of wood under the pan. pemove the linkage, cooler lines, & kickdown cable. Put the trans jack under the trans. Remove 6 bolts holding the trans. to engine, pull the trans. back a little & lower it down.
