Periodically and then increasingly frequently my starter would make a horrible grinding noise. I checked the flywheel and there was some ring gear damage starting. I replaced the starter with a spare and the problem vanished. When I took the starter apart I discovered that the clutch assembly was worn out and it had a lot of play in the mechanism such that the gear would not always align properly, I guess. | | |
