that reinforcing plate is it, there's nothing shown in the assembly manual like you describe in the drivers door, a PO must have added it - using the regular light truck mirrors you won't have any problem, it's the big truck mirrors with long straight arms that do a lot of dancing around, and that's why there were
optional 'west coast' style mirrors offered
