To answer your question, I don't know how close is too close but my exhaust pipes were too close for me. I had three areas that concerned me. Master cylinder, the rubber brake hose at my third member, and both pipes are very close to my gas tank. I solved my heat problems by purchasing several different lengths and sizes of fiberglass with a silicon coating sleeving. It's used to protect hydraulic lines on welding robots to keep the sparks from burning through the lines. I split it, wrapped the offending areas of exhaust pipe and clamped it with sst wire ties. Smaller size got used on the rubber brake line.
