Eric - take the top off the box on the lower column - clean it up well
like this - make sure the notched arms are not excessively worn round at their openings [a little rounding is OK], the pawl isn't worn, and the spring isn't broken - see that the rod connections at the box arms are adjusted right as you move it thru the gears [carefully with the top off] - regrease it with some high temp grease [do not "pack" it full] .... replace the top and you'll be amazed at how much better it is .... also check the adjustment of the shift lever at the top according to the procedure in the shop manual at the beginning of section 7
