There was 2 different TO brgs. used by Chevy from the late 40's to 84. The long one measures just short of 2 in. & the short one is. about 1 1/4. Pretty much what Denny said. There are 2 different diaphram type clutches used. The older style has the fingers near paralell with the plate surface. It uses the long TO brg. The newer style the fingers protrude outward to about the edge of the cover. This is often called a beehive clutch. It uses the short brg. If you have the old 3 or 4 finger clutch its time to get rid of it as the dia. type is much better. It uses a different to brg but that type clutch is very rare on GM except some of the older big trucks. Most replacement clutches are the Beehive type & are fine for the older trucks as long as the coresponding TO brg is used. There is nothing wrong with the older dia. type but the Beehive is better suited for high RPM. If you have the proper brg. & it is hanging up like you said, I wonder if the fingers on the clutch dia. are worn off from a previous TO brg failure. I have a long TO brg. I could send you.
