I did another dumb thing and did not pay close enough attention when removing the 3 speed shift control unit that is mounted just above the steering box on the steering column. (58 Chevy, 3 speed, manual steering)

I first disconnected the shift lever and upper rod coming into the cab. On the lower rod that goes into the shift control box, there was a coil spring and 2 pieces of a rubber boot.

1. What is the purpose of this spring and rubber boot?

2. Where do they go?

I have looked in both the Service manual and Factory assembly manual and can't find anything helpful, so now I am turing to the most trusted and knowledgabe source of information.
