Yep, shade tree overload springs! If they're welded, particularly if it's at both ends, they will break off eventually. I'd suggest jacking the rear end up to relieve as much tension as possible, and use a cutoff wheel on a small hand-held grinder to remove them. It's not uncommon to get some frame bending at the top side if the load gets heavy enough- - - - -without a spring perch or a crossmember, that spot's not designed to carry suspension loads!
