Hy sepp22, one way to tell a six volt starter from a twelve volt starter is, the six volt starter has a larger diameter armature shaft. That is the reason we can't just swap starter drives when we want to change from six to twelve volt starter. A quick way to know one from the other if they still have tags is, a six volt starter has a black tag, and a twelve volt starter has a red tag, hope that helps.
