Hy bigdog58, yes you can connect the alternator output wire to the battery wire from the old generator regulator, you can splice them together, but if you leave the terminal on the wire and bolt them together, make sure you insulate the connection very well. There is no need to remove the field wire, just tape the ends out of sight, hope that helps.
