The side plates have tapered holse where the pins come through, similar to a ball joint or tire rod where they mount into the knuckle. You may have to give them a good whack to get them off, but the shoudln't be too hard. Then the pin should come out easily.
Wrenchbender, I just checked the manuals, seem the change was was '57 to the pins with the nuts.
