The "lined-up rings" thing is an "old mechanic's tale", sort of like an old wives' tale. Rings move around the piston all the time, and the gaps do line up occasionally. In a matter of a few seconds, they'll be in a different position. I've watched that happen on a glass-cylindered research engine many times by freezing the piston motion with a delay-flash timing light.
