The most common has a drum with an inner and outer shoe, then there is one with a band around the outside of the drum and still another has two shoes in the drum. All three of these brakes have different adjustment methods. The most common having the most complex adjustment start by ensuring that the brake is completely released and the wheel are chocked then loosen the jam nut on the bolt at the bottom that pushes up on the outer shoe. screw this bolt in to obtain a clearance between the shoe and drum directly above the bolt of .010" to .015" and tighten the jam nut. To the right side of the bolt that you just adjusted at the end of the bell crank that applies the force to the two shoes is a J bolt adjust the top nut on this J bolt up then the bottom nut up till you get a clearance between the inner shoe and the drum of .010 to .015 and tighten the top nut back down to hold this adjustment. The other two types are pretty straight forward and only have one adjusting point. | | |
