I'm addressing the same question as Lee (they do kind of look like dried-up tar caulking). Are those anti-squeak channel-shaped pieces glued on the edge of the inner fenders? On mine, I'm seeing some staples along that edge also, which may have held it, but I don't have a staple gun that can do that!

For the bottom "flap", is there a recommended substitute for that area or something you'd recommend fabricating? Was it just a rubber skirt that covered the opening but which didn't act as a buffer?
