One thing I discovered in my research was that strong warning by many to use GL4 gear oil - a formulation that was made for early transmissions. However, there are some products on the market that advertise themselves as being GL4 AND GL5 compliant.
Now how can it be that one manufacturer strongly recommends against using GL5, and another says (in essence) "use either one".
My original question about additives was inspired by the concept of "break-in" which I know we do with engines, but I am not familiar with gearboxes.
As it took me 8 months to cobble together a replacement transmission I would prefer not to have to do this again anytime soon!
