It's always a good idea to wire up HD lighting with a relay. A lot of switches can't handle the amps that kind of lighting needs and even if they could it's still better to wire them thru a relay, that way you don't have to use heavy gauge wire to the switch.
Simply put...the switch activates the relay, the relay turns on the lights.
