Great explanation. After reading this, it sure sounds like the wrong pump for your engine. When installing a typical pump on the earlier engines..216/235, it is a chore to compress the pump arm against the cam lobe, even with the lever on the heel.
I might be the 'King of Confusion'. I guess my choices would be wrong pump for the application, suction blocked or pump installed improperly.
What else could it be. It's a puzzler, keep us posted.
