I used my "secret weapon"... NYALOX BRUSHES for stripping the paint. I used them in progressively finer grit: the gray first, then the orange and then the blue, each step removes the sanding scratches of the previous. Then I finished with Brasso.

FYI, it's been at least a year since I did it and it's looking like an old penny now.
