Well after ditching the original carb (rebuilt and cleaned it) I finally got my 51 Chev to run right with a carb off an 80s AMC. I took it down the road for a victory lap. It runs ok although power does seem to be lacking. Could be because the throttle isn't hooked up properly (coat hanger). Anyway I am just stoked that I can drive it. There is a ton of evidence of farmer engineering on this puppy. Wiring everywhere, lots of jury rigged repairs. I can't say I am helping much there since I've done a few myself since getting this thing. I got a free set of military NDTs for the back. They aren't weatherchecked, tread is about half an inch at least in the centers. Getting them mounted though wasn't cheap. I got a set of freebie steer tires for the front. The tires are all a bit larger than the originals. The rears are 11x20s and the fronts will be 10x20s. With the smaller 8.5x20s the truck has a bit of rake to it now. There is a crap load of shake in this thing, could be tires, could be something else. Seems to get better with speed. The plan is to get a plow mounted on it for winter and use it for hauling logs into the saw mill. A few pics of my joy ride today:
