you want one end of the resistor to get power from the ignition switch when "on" and the other end to the coil +

then if the starter has a terminal from the side of the foot switch on top, a wire from there to the output side of the resistor [so "bypassing" it] or direct to the coil + [again, bypassing the resistor] .... if the starter doesn't have that side terminal you can skip it or rig another way to have full 12V to the coil when the starter is engaged - or get an internally resisted coil is easiest

the object is to give the coil the extra juice to insure good spark when the starter is drawing a lot, but that won't be as much of a problem as not having the resistor in the circuit and feeding too much during normal operation
