I have had the transmission and clutch out of my ’53 3600 and have a question regarding reinstalling the clutch. The 48 – 51 Truck Shop Manual with ’52 supplement, says in order to install the clutch, to first “ Hand crank the engine until the “X” mark on the flywheel is at the bottom”. I have looked on all sides of the flywheel and only find marks on the engine side that appear to be timing marks. They are C U then a small o that has a yellow line through it (I take this as TDC) then 5 and then a triangular mark.
There is one mark on the transmission side of the flywheel that appears to be an “L” at an angle and fairly close to one of the 9 bolt holes. There is simply no “X” on the flywheel.
The manual then says to line up the “X” mark on the clutch housing flange with the “X” on the flywheel. There is a straight mark on the clutch housing flange but no “X”.
Does it really matter which way the clutch mounts to the flywheel as long as all 9 bolts are used and secure? (I have a clutch pilot tool)
