Ramps in combination with backing up to a bank/hill, or with the wheels in a ditch is a good method.

I've used the forklift several times to load and unload mowers, just back the mower on the forks, pick it up and roll it off into the bed, repeat for unloading. Even if the forks aren't long enough to reach under the front wheels the deck sits on the forks and it works just fine.
