I've never taken a pinion nut off. It's not left hand threaded, is it?
Also, one trick I learned from my Air Force days is when you have a stubborn nut or bolt, try tightening it a bit first. It's worked for me more times than I can count. Seems that if you tighten it up it loosens things up and encourages the nut or bolt to begin moving in the proper direction.
