Good directions here. That is exactly how I drove mine for 12 years. The only thing I would add is about splitting gears. I found that 1st w/od is practically identical to 2nd without od. 2nd w/od was pretty close to 3rd without od, so I only split these these gears when trying to accelerate with a heavy load, uphill, or both.
This tranny is a great setup but as Cosmo says, the od unit is not overly robust so be kind to it.
