My '51 GMC 350 series (formerly mine) truck was built (Oakland) and stayed in CA. all it's life. It is VIN'ed using the original engine's serial #.
Apparently, this was typical at that time.
The door post tag was never removed or altered in any way (imagine that, OCK!)
Be that as it may, DMV refused to change the paperwork to reflect the serial # on the door post (I wanted it changed, just in case I had to pull the motor out, I had a 270 waiting to go in).
Otherwise, get a moving permit, have it weighed and all the other inspections done. They will issue you a new VIN # tag and stamp it on the truck.
