Short pump, always. Never heard a swapper say, "darn, this engine is too short". One drawback is that the last short pumps in cars were in 1968 and 1972 in trucks. This means you usually have to buy new (repro) brackets and they can be pricey. Still it's a lot easier to use spacers and fan shroud that to modify a space to take something too long.
