original cable operated valves were the ranco valves with temperature controls that were around the heater in the cab, or later inside the heater box - eventually they all result in water leaking into the cab, usually unnoticed until it was a real mess .... IMO the best place for the more modern style cable operated on/off valves is in the hose just before it goes thru the firewall, if it leaks it's outside
