That problem came up on this forum a week or 2 ago. His problem was number 1 spark plug was dirty. Check the point gap & dist cap & rotor. Look inside the cap real close for carbon tracts. You can check the wires with an ohmeter. Figure 10,000 ohms or less per foot. You can time the engine on #6 wire. It gives the exact same reading as #1. HEI is great but a conversion kit to electronic ignition is all you need.
