I've already got the side cover off. In fact there are no fenders on that side of the engine so I've got very good access and plenty of room. It sure sounds more like something is hitting, but if disolving some varnish will clear it up, then I'm all for it. Do I just squirt the oil in from the spark plug hole, or do I run some down from the top of the valve stem, too?
