Doesn't make a difference one way or another of the diff is centered or offset. I'm not sure if you have the axle you are shortening yet. If not, you might look into an IMCA modified full floating 9 inch axle. They can be ordered in any width, lug pattern, and have many different options for disc brakes and gears. I put one of these in my 1959 gmc 1/2 ton after ripping the perches off the eaton ho33 axle that was in there. Anyway, there are plenty of axles that will work without having to cut em down, so do a search and you might save some money.
