the shop manual is a good thing to have, but simple things that the mechanics were expected to be able to figure out won't be covered - once you see how it's supposed to work it's just a matter of sussing out how to overcome the 50 years of mis-use, might just be a matter of light lubrication or tightening up the pivot pin
