Firstly Robert,I hope your dog makes a good recovery.
Assuming you're happy with the M/C you maybe right about the caliper pistons sticking.
I try to make a habit of pumping the brake pedal every few days,as mine has been sitting for a while too.
This will hopefully avoid the same problems you seem to be having.
