Depends on your defination of "done right" really.
If you want it factory correct, yeah a kit is the best option.
If you want it reliable and functional AND you have the know how you can save a lot. I dropped a little more than a hundred bones on my system, and that's wiring a 2-ton dump, from scratch, with extra lights & a 7-pin trailer connector. I didn;t have a lot of choice, it was pretty thrashed when I got it, was just easier to go to town with the wire cutters and start over.
Again, depends on what you're looking for in your finished project.
