My 53 1-ton panel has a 1956-1962 235 engine in it. I cleaned off the boss to the rear of the distributor looking for the serial number and its blank. As near as I can tell there has never been a number stamped there.

I don't think its blank because of a previous rebuild because the boss is at an angle that matches the distributor pedestal mount. Decking the block would not have affected this area.

When the factory replaced engines did the engines have serial numbers stamped in them?

Or are there any other means of identifying a specific engine serial number other than the one stamped in the boss?
