I just finished painting my 228 this past Saturday. I used some soft foam rubber to fill the holes I didn't want to get paint into, such as the intake/exhaust ports, distributor mounting hole and fuel pump mounting hole. I made the mistake of using two small pieces for the fuel pump hole and when I removed one piece the other piece fell inside. I can't see the piece but I would guess that it's sitting in the bottom of the oil pan. My instinct is to try to get it out, hopefully without dropping the pan. I'll do that if I have to, though. My question is what do you think would happen if it was left in there? The engine is on a stand right now, so accessibility is not much of a problem. I'm thinking my best bet would be to try to fish it out through the fuel pump hole.
