Well, that explains it. My latches are different than yours. Maybe the '60-'63 was a different latch. My latch has a different configuration. I'm going to try rigging a linkage to move the lock pawl that the rod used to connect to.
The door release lever is the same, so I can use the same cable set-up that you did.
