Being young once upon a time....................and knowing Qjets like I do.... you are reading the instructions wrong, like I said it ain't no 2 1/4", you are looking at the wrong column. And you probably have other mis-assembly problems also. Sorry, but redo it and re read it. Too much gas means the float is set too high. From the top of the bowl to inward of the tip of the float about 3/16 is about 1/4-3/8. This is the adjustment to the float you care about, while holding the valve end down into the seat with gentle force and being sure the hinge pin does not raise up, measure from the bowl rim as I said above. You don't care about how much it goes toward the bottom when released, that is a given when the other is adjusted correctly. Also you could have gaskets on backwards or flipped and causing vacuum leaks. On early rochesters the plugs leak and need jb weld and some carbs leak around the throttle shafts. No cars.... next time we will put the stovebolt curse on your super 88 and it will morph into a Yugo.
Eliminate the back pressure theory first then chop, cut and rebuild your Qjet, carefully!!!!! on the bench, with good light and NO Pabst!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes we always read the Bio. NOBODY can do a qjet right their first time, everything has to be right, no forcing of rods etc. or it's wrong!!! It's hard to "close up" after assembly, you need four hands. There are 30 things you could have done wrong. The always upbeat and positive, Bartamos.
