Long-offset pumps are there to accomodate the relocated timing marks on the cover- - - -about 12:00 instead of the earlier 2:00 position. Be sure the pump, timing cover, and harmonic balancer are off the same-vintage engine. A mismatched timing cover and balancer will result in ignition timing that's impossible to adjust properly with a timing light.
