After following retired wrench's excellent suggestion, if the lid seems to clamp properly, you might have a warped lid and or a non-level mating-surface on the top of the canister. These could be tested by removing the lid, putting chalk on the rim of the canister, and tightening the lid. Remove the lid and see if you have a continuous "bead" of chalk on the mating area?
