I just hold the pump out a little ways and at an angle, so the vent tube is away from the stream, and I have no problem on 4 stock 49 trucks. That is with the tank behind the seat. I hold the pump on rather than locking it on, but I could, I just prefer to stop when I hear the gas starting up the hose rather than letting the auto shutoff catch it. Besides- it doesn't take that long to put in 12 gallons.
Now I would hate to have to use those california type nozzles with the black sock over the pump nozzle. I had great fun with them on a motorcycle trip out there.
