Does you 1949 GMC have a positive ground (as original) or has it been converted to 12v negative ground?
It looks like the foot starter assembly was the same for many years (at least for 47-59 on standard cab GM trucks). However, the 6v and 12v foot-pedal starters were different (to match a 48-55 6v or 55-59 12v truck's flywheel).
