not quite clear just what you're saying Bob, except the signal units do have some springs and detents in them that should positively locate the 'off' position, and if the switch isn't moving correctly it could affect the brake lights
you should pull the wheel and take a look - see if
the springs and pawls shown here are all intact, the coil springs are important to proper operation
